The actor, 32, has described the English theoretical physicist as “incredibly flirtatious” and “a complete player”.

In an interview with Esquire magazine, the British actor said: “Felicity [co-star Felicity Jones] came in they got on like a house on fire.

“Stephen was incredibly flirtatious. A complete player.”

Eddie met the University of Cambridge-educated scientist as part of his research into The Theory of Everything – a biopic about Stephen Hawking’s life.

Although he’s an A-list actor himself, Eddie said he was “really” nervous and just waffled at the highly intelligent cosmologist.

He said: “It’s amazing, the aura he has. You’re so used to how he looks — the silhouette and the voice — and I was really nervous.

“I just waffled: talking about him, to him. It was pretty embarrassing.”

And the star admitted he felt a certain amount of pressure playing the part of Stephen, making sure he did the scientist – who suffers from a motor neuron disease.

He said: “There’s a moment of excitement when you get a part like this, which soon gives way to dread. We knew if we screwed it up we’d be lambasted because Stephen is such an icon.

“I’m not going to lie, it was demanding and pretty intense. But we had fun, too, just as Stephen does. He doesn’t live a disease, he lives a forward-thinking, funny life.”

The Theory of Everything is set to be a success, but that doesn’t stop Eddie worrying about the release.

He said: “I want this story to be seen. The stakes were so high.

“One of the first things my mate Charlie Cox [the actor who also stars] said to me was, ‘The great thing about this part is that you have no option but to give it everything.’ He was right.”
